Below we detail the types of residence and their main characteristics:

Mercosur Permanent Residence:

It is the procedure carried out by foreign nationals of Mercosur or relatives of Uruguayans with the intention of residing, working, or simply accessing Uruguayan documents. Residency is granted definitively and is renewed every 3 years through an extremely simple procedure.

Definitive Legal Residence:

Procedure for foreigners (non-Mercosur nationals) with the intention of residing and/or working in Uruguay for a period greater than 2 years. It is processed before the National Directorate of Migration and allows access to the definitive Uruguayan ID, which must be renewed every 3 years.

Mercosur Temporary Residence:

Aims at foreign nationals of Mercosur who want to reside and/or work in the country for a period of less than 2 years (extendable for another 2). It is processed before the National Directorate of Migration and allows access to the Uruguayan ID for 2 years. It has the advantage of requiring fewer requirements than common temporary residence.

Temporary Residence:

Procedure for foreigners (non-Mercosur nationals) with the intention of working in Uruguay for a period of less than 2 years (extendable for another 2).
